A number of you have told me about an increasing number of SMS scam messages targeting your mothers.
It starts with an innocent-looking text message*.
[If you can’t see the image above, it says “Hi mum I’m texting you off a friends [sic] phone, I’ve smashed mine and their phones [sic] about to die, can you WhatsApp my new number number-included Please”.]
Dublin Live has written about this type of scam, and how people across Ireland and the UK have been fooled into transferring money to the criminals running the scam.
So what?
If your mother** received this kind of message, how long do you think it would take her to know it’s a scam?
Unless your answer is ‘straight away’, then give her a call*** and make sure she’s aware of the scam.
* Apart from the crimes against grammar.
** Or father.
*** She’d love to hear from you.
