I recently discussed the risks when we hand over a laptop or mobile phone to a repair shop. We should NOT share our login password unless it is absolutely necessary.

Our password is like the key to the front door of our homes. We have to try to stop the bad guys from getting their hands on the key.

But we all know there are other ways that the bad guys could get into our homes.

This is why we check that the back doors in our homes are also secure.

So what?

IT security is just like home security:

Yes, we should worry about the front door.

But let’s not forget about the back doors.

I’ll talk about some of these back doors over the next few days. Some are pretty obvious – e.g. the login accounts used by IT providers. But others may surprise you.
