If you have an open fire place in your house, did you know that up to 20% of the heat in your home could be escaping up the chimney?

A simple solution is to use a chimney draft excluder or a chimney balloon to seal the chimney when it is not in use. They are very quick solutions to deal with the problem, although there is a bit of manual effort involved to remove them before lighting a fire, and to re-insert them when the fire place has cooled.

A better solution is to install a stove, which has air vents that you can quickly open and close as needed. However, you will need to check your budget before you can buy a stove and you may need to wait a few weeks before someone with the right know-how can install it for you.

What has this got to do with cyber security?

When dealing with any risk, remember:

  • There are probably multiple ways to reduce the risk.
  • For high risks, implementing a good enough solution today is better than doing nothing while you wait for a perfect solution tomorrow.
